India's Tintu Luka qualifies for 800m Olympics Semifinal

India's Tintu Luka on Thursday qualified for the semifinals of 800m race at the London Olympics with a timing of 2:01.75s. She finished third behind Mariya Savinova of Russia and Alice Schmidt of USA. The final is scheduled for Saturday. The Heat 2 was won by Russia's Mariya Savinova (2:01.56) while second was Alice Schmidt of USA (2:01.65). If Luka qualifies for the final on Friday, she will become the third Indian athlete to do so in te track and field event at the ongoing London Games after Krishna Poonia and Vikas Gowda.
The 23-year-old runner from Kerala, finished third in the Heat 2 at the Olympic Stadium to progress to tomorrow's semi-finals. There were seven runners in Heat 2. Luka, who is part of PT Usha's Usha School of Athletics, holds the national record in 800m. She had won bronze at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

  1. I have not understood the thinking of P T Usha.

    It has been observed that Tintu Luka is best upto 400 meters and she loses her steam after that and gets fully tired by the time she reaches 800.

    Why is P T Usha insisting Tintu on running for 800 meters ? Why not 400 meters ? Is it to protect her own fame that she had in 400 M,400 M hurdles,100 M,110 M Hurdles,etc ?

    Look at Gopichand,he is training Prakash and Saina in singles badminton and wants them to win olympic medal which he himself could not achieve.He is not telling them to play doubles or mixed doubles.And success is here to see for all.

    I think P.T.Usha should have second thought and change the event of Tintu Luka and train her to compete in 400 meters where P T Usha herself had been a legend and had finished closed 4th in olympic finals.

    We need strategic long term planning considering our potential to achieve olympic glory...
